The first Jira-initiated discussion (there is a comment area below every Jira task) was by Rosedale, who provides a lengthy description (more than sixteen hundred words) of his reasoning on why the telehubs must be abandoned. After citing Jacobs’ ideas as the impetus for their implementation, he lists the above shortcomings and then adds a few more observations, such as the fact that telehubs, chosen a priori by Linden Lab, do not move dynamically to nearby, higher-density locations. Another issue for him was the desirability of letting landowners set a specific spot as the local arrival point—users arriving from a telehub often would have trouble finding the “entrance” to their destination, as the red beacon was often centered on the building or other structure. He goes on to suggest that simply standing in Second Life, with a 128 meter viewing distance available in every direction, should be enough to satisfy Jacobs’s ideal of bringing people into contact with possibly unexpected diversions.
